  • Over five years, 16 groups conducted observations at 45 globally distributed stations, about 3000-4000 km apart from each other.[4][7][12] 12 mobile tracking stations were used, which observed during favorable weather conditions during a few minutes of twilight each evening.[7][why?][clarification needed] BC4 cameras were used to photograph the satellite.[12] Observations were taken when the satellite was visible simultaneously to multiple stations at the same time.[12] This resulted in the fixing of the precise locations of 38 different points around the world.[4] This could be used to help determine the precise locations of the continents relative to each other, and to help determine the precise shape and size of the earth.

    that is amazing! so cool

  • being a kid and discovering your friends parents grow closet…

one of my favorite “omg it just occurred to me” memories is being a young boy and my mom had friends that lived 20 minutes outside of town in a little hippy village. Their house was one of those super old houses that had a wash room but didnt actually have a toilet in the house, because it was so old and those hippies didn’t want to update it (this is probably the late 1970s or maybe very early 1980s). So you had to go to the outhouse out back if you needed to do that type of business. So I remember one day before breakfast, going to the outhouse and coming back thinking that there was a skunk somewhere because oh boy did it smell!

so I come in and announce to everyone in the kitchen that I think there is a skunk out back. They all had a good laugh at me. Years later my sister was telling me that “oh yeah those friends of mom’s, they smoked a lot of weed. They even had huge bushes growing out in their back yard near the outhouse”

I still remember the way they all laughed, and it took me some time but I had a good laugh about that too
